Roe Green Walled Garden celebrates a Special Award for innovation from the Green Flag Award Scheme

RGWG is one of just fifteen parks in the UK to achieve the award. This is presented to Green Flag Award or Community Award winning sites that have made changes which have brought outstanding benefits to both their site and their community. Our project was the making of a stumpery by our members and a group of 16-18 year olds on the Headstart Programme (part of the National Citizenship Scheme).

Eighteeen young people helped our members, by digging the stumps and planting ferns, adding the 'Runes Alphabet' as a display.
This new garden makes a wonderful wildlife habitat, especially for insects. Our Member of Parliament visited and was impressed by the voluntary work of our volunteers and young people. He commented that 'It was great to see the Stumpery that the volunteers and Headstart kids have created at Roe Green Community Garden. Pollinators will love it.'  Paul Todd, Green Flag Award Scheme manager said: 'Congratulations to everyone involved in Roe Green Walled Garden, a worthy winner of the Special Innovation Award. Research has proved that quality parks and green spaces play a vital role within their local communities. RGWG is a perfect example of this.'

The Green Flag Community Award is a national scheme that recognises high quality green spaces in the UK that are managed by voluntary and community groups. BHCG's work at Roe Green Walled Garden has received the Green Flag Community Award each year since 2011. Until 2010 the Green Pennant Award was received each year since 2005.
