Butterfly Monitoring 2009 Survey

Butterfly numbers have varied considerably on the Country Park transect during recent years due to factors including weather and the management of the hay meadows.

While it is therefore difficult to make comparisons over a small number of of recent years, the Meadow Brown numbers appear to show some recovery and this could be due to the reintroduction of the hay harvesting (as compared with flail cutting).

Brimstones are benefiting from the planting of Alder Buckthorns, the establishment of these trees and of Brimstone populations.

Painted Lady butterflies were recorded on the transect as part of the large migration of 2009 though numbers were modest compared with those recorded at some other transects in London.
